Top Tip #5 – Virtual Backgrounds are all the rage!

Are you embarrassed by your cluttered home office? Wondering how to hide your hectic working environment while maintaining a professional appearance with colleagues? Or, do you simply want to have some fun during your daily virtual meetings? You are certainly not alone! We have all been there, especially since the workforce was forced (almost overnight) to work from living rooms, kitchens, playrooms, and any number of other places that were not intended to be a home office.

Since the thought of revamping your home in a time like this seems, virtually impossible with everything else you’re juggling, the task of adding a Zoom virtual background to disguise or refresh your space- with no tools, money, or shopping trips required, is clearly a great idea!

The beauty of virtual backgrounds

Using a virtual background allows you to disguise your actual office background during a video call. Instead of showing your cluttered or outdated home office, you can superimpose a modern office space, and make it seem as if you’re in a conference room or even pretend you’re on a beach or on top of a mountain!

You can select any image or video you have saved and set it as your background in just a few clicks. The feature isn’t perfect and works best if you have a green screen, but it’s still surprisingly good.

Adding a virtual background

Here’s how to set a virtual background on Zoom:

  • Download the background of your choice. Better yet, download a few options, in case you want to switch them out.
  • After signing into a Zoom call, look for an icon that says “Stop video” in the bottom left corner of the window. Click the arrow to the right side of it and select “Choose a virtual background.”
  • Select the background you wish to use. There are several pre-loaded options, but you can add your own selection by clicking the ‘Add image or Add Video’ option and then uploading your chosen backgrounds.
  • You can upload as many backgrounds as you would like and switch them whenever you please.
